Rodney Davis Continues to Duck Tough Questions on Paul Ryan Budget
In a candidate forum on Saturday, May 12th, days before Rodney Davis was chosen by a panel of 14 Republican Party County Chairpersons in a closed-door nomination process, Habeeb Habeeb, the moderator of the forum and the Chairman of the Champaign County Republican Central Committee, posed a direct question to the candidates: “Will you support the Ryan budget proposal? If not why?”
Rodney Davis’s one-word response: “Ditto.” True to style, instead of answering the question, Davis used the answer of the previous respondent: “I would support the Ryan budget in concept. There are some tweaks that I think that I’d make to it, but in concept he was right on.” Continue reading “Rodney Davis Continues to Duck Tough Questions on Paul Ryan Budget”

The Gill Education Plan: Build a Strong Middle Class and Invest in Our Future
“Without a well-educated, well-prepared workforce, our nation can’t hope to compete and our children won’t enjoy the opportunities their parents or grandparents did. Congress, under the irresponsible direction of misguided priorities, has worked to gut funding for education from preschool to post-graduate and career training programs. Our nation’s ability to inspire the next generation of American scientists, doctors, engineers and teachers is undermined by these radically short-sighted policies. Education is at the core of investing in our future and building a strong middle class.” —Dr. David Gill, Democrat for Congress Continue reading “The Gill Education Plan: Build a Strong Middle Class and Invest in Our Future”

The Gill Fair Trade Plan: Export Illinois Goods & Products, Not Jobs
“We must revitalize the American manufacturing sector. A nation that builds things is a nation with a strong and growing middle class. In Congress, I will work to stop bad trade policies that undermine middle-class workers.” —Dr. David Gill, Democrat for Congress
David Gill knows our global economy should be an opportunity to sell Illinois goods, services and crops to the world. But all too often, so-called “free” trade deals sell out American workers and allow other countries to get away with manipulating their currencies, paying sweatshop wages and ignoring workplace safety standards and basic environmental protections.
Dr. Gill supports a new framework for our trade policy to put US products and workers first. He’ll push to knock down barriers to US exports and close loopholes that keep trade deals from being truly fair for American companies and their workers.

Dr. David Gill’s Letter to Rep. Tim Johnson:

Washington, DC 20515
Dear Congressman Johnson,
It’s good to hear from you. I apologize for my delay in responding to your letter, but I’ve been campaigning non-stop across the district in recent days.
I too am disappointed by the negative tone of these Super PACs. They started running attack ads against me almost two months ago. Over $1 million had been spent against me on TV and radio as of October 1, 2012 (chart attached). My opponent and various Super PACs and national committees have plans to spend millions more.
I make my own decisions about the campaign and I don’t take my cues from politicians or Washington committees. I’ve been telling my story and talking about who I am and what I care about—and the voters are responding. Continue reading “Dr. David Gill’s Letter to Rep. Tim Johnson”

Desperate New Republican Attack Dishonors Memory of Dead Illinoisans
The National Republican Congressional Committee and Rodney Davis’ campaign for Congress have sunk to a new low today, attacking Illinoisans who suffered fatal heart attacks and questioning their families’ stories. The attacks come in the wake of a new TV ad issued this week by the Gill for Congress campaign in which the Bloomington ER doctor talks about a 39-year old woman who Gill treated more than a decade ago at the emergency room at John Warner Hospital in Clinton. Susan had experienced chest pain a week before and gone to an emergency department. Her chest pain subsided after being treated with nitroglycerin. “Rodney Davis’ rollout of a supposed “market-based” health plan is little more than payback for his insurance company sponsors,” said Gill. “Clearly, when Aetna Insurance paid for a barrage of false and deceptive ads against me, they extracted a promise from Davis. The promise is Davis’ support for a return to the bad old days, when health insurers could freely deny coverage and impose lifetime caps. Those so-called ‘market-based’ tactics insure only one thing — the death of patients.”

Democrats nationally are raising the profile of the U.S. House race in the new 13th District, alerting supporters across the country they think it’s among winnable contests.
U.S. Rep. STEVE ISRAEL of New York, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, had a conference call Wednesday to announce the addition of 13 races nationally to what it calls “red-to-blue” status. There are now 51 races nationally they put in that category, and the two Illinois candidates newly named to the list are DAVID GILL of Bloomington in the 13th, who is running against Republican RODNEY DAVIS of Taylorville; and WILLIAM ENYART, former adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard, who is taking on Republican JASON PLUMMER in the new 12th District in southwestern Illinois.
“It’s a district that gave President (BARACK) OBAMA nearly 56 percent of the vote,” Israel said of the new 13th, which includes part of Springfield. He said Gill has “put together a … very impressive grass-roots campaign.”

MONTICELLO — Meeting with officials at the new $22 million Kirby Medical Center in Monticello, Democratic congressional candidate David Gill said that a budget proposal supported by his Republican opponent would harm such critical-access hospitals.
There are nine critical-access hospitals in the 13th Congressional District and the budget proposal advanced by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., would threaten their existence, Gill said Tuesday.
“It would reduce funding for Medicare and Medicaid and it aims to turn Medicare into a voucher program in which you no longer see direct payments from Uncle Sam to places like this,” Gill said. “There are 1,300 hospitals like this all around the country and it would have a dramatic impact. It’s not just political hyperbole.”

The two candidates were separated by 143 votes after Macoupin County released its final election numbers at about 4:30 a.m.
Gill said the 13th is a whole different district.
“It’s what you call a D-plus 1 district. It leans slightly Democratic, so to have a D after your name it’s not a handicap, and certainly it’s not a handicap to not be an incumbent,” Gill said. Continue reading “Democrat Gill claims win in tight 13th race”

DECATUR — Despite earlier indications that he might ask for a recount, Matt Goetten conceded to Bloomington physician David Gill in the 13th Congressional District Democratic primary Friday.
The concession came after the state Board of Elections certified the primary results, cementing Gill’s 163-vote lead over Goetten with a final tally of 15,536 to 15,373.
“I was honored to earn the support of thousands of people across Central Illinois who were tired of failed leadership in Washington and wanted to count on good jobs, a strong middle class, and a secure economy for our kids,” Goetten said in a prepared statement. “I wish David Gill the best of luck in taking on Republicans’ failed agenda that all too readily caters to special interests and the wealthiest Americans, but puts our way of life in jeopardy.”
In the days following the March 20 primary, Gill claimed victory while Goetten’s campaign raised questions about whether all the votes had been counted.
Gill said Friday that Goetten had called him to concede personally, and they wished each other luck.

JERSEYVILLE — Greene County State’s Attorney Matt Goetten has conceded the Democratic primary for Congress in Illinois’ 13th District to Bloomington physician David Gill.
Goetten issued his concession in a news release on Friday afternoon. After the primary election Gill had a 143-vote lead over Goetten with all precincts reporting but without absentee, provisional and overseas ballots counted. Gill had declared victory, but Goetten initially refused to concede. Goetten said in a statement that he wishes Gill “the best of luck.”
Gill would have faced incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson. But Johnson said earlier this month that he would retire. Johnson’s replacement will be chosen by county Republican Party chairmen after the results of Johnson’s primary win are certified.
